Fall 2027 undergraduate planning
Eva College Strategy
Deep re-evaluation of Sara Hanson's 25-school exploration pool—plus a College of Lake County transfer pathway—for biology, human health and psychology, now calibrated with three years of Stevenson/Naviance outcomes.
Executive recommendation
Build around flexible human-biology routes—not biomedical engineering.
The original list contains excellent institutions, but it is too reach-heavy, too expensive and still partly optimized for Eva's former HCI/CS direction.
Positive signals
Biology interest, comfort with anatomy/dissection work, strong AP Calculus recovery, demanding senior sciences, sustained band and figure skating.
Current interests
Biology, human anatomy and psychology. Chemistry is acceptable; math is manageable.
Lower-interest areas
Physics, heavy engineering, coding and AI-centered work. These should not drive college selection.
Senior-year evidence
AP Biology, AP Psychology, AP Statistics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, AP Literature and Wind Ensemble.
Recommended portfolio
A balanced, Naviance-calibrated Top 10
This is the recommended academic/admissions portfolio—not yet the financially final list. Seven schools are out of state, so net-price work could reorder or remove several entries.
Wisconsin-Madison is the clear reach; UIUC is a reach/target after local calibration
Pittsburgh; Minnesota is target in CBS and likely in CLA
Indiana and Michigan State
UIC, Iowa, Iowa State and Illinois State
Planning bands: below 30% = reach; 30–54% = target; 55–79% = likely; 80%+ = strong likely. A range crossing a cutoff carries two labels. These are analyst judgments informed by—but not mechanically equal to—Stevenson's Naviance history.
| School | Recommended starting route | Planning chance / band | Sticker benchmark | Strategic reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|
UIUC Top 10 |
LAS Biology; explore Integrative Biology and Molecular & Cellular Biology before choosing. | 25–40% · Reach/target | ~$43.4k IL | Key in-state academic/value reach-target and unusually well matched to Eva's need to explore within biology. |
Pittsburgh Top 10 |
Dietrich undeclared, then Biology or Biochemistry; keep Psychology visible. | 50–65% · Target/likely | ~$62.6k OOS | Most distinctive clinical environment in the realistic middle group because of UPMC. Apply early. |
Wisconsin Top 10 |
L&S Biology, Biochemistry or Psychology; avoid Biomedical Engineering. | 8–15% · High reach | ~$63.3k OOS* | Open majors and strong pre-health experiences, but Stevenson evidence makes this a cost-conditional high reach. |
Minnesota Top 10 |
CBS first choice if desired; CLA Biology, Society & Environment as alternate. | CBS 30–45% · Target CLA 55–70% · Likely |
~$63.8k OOS | BSE combines biology, health and social/behavioral context while retaining pre-health preparation. |
Indiana Top 10 |
Human Biology or Exploratory–College; Biology, Biochemistry and Psychology remain accessible. | 70–85% · Likely/strong likely | ~$63.0k OOS | One of the cleanest curricular matches for anatomy, psychology, biology and health exploration. |
UIC Top 10 |
Integrated Health Studies in Applied Health Sciences, or Biology in LAS; add any missing professional-school prerequisites. | 85–95% · Strong likely | ~$42.0k IL+ | Best overall practical anchor: realistic, flexible, local and embedded in the Illinois Medical District. |
Iowa Top 10 |
CLAS Biology or Biochemistry & Molecular Biology; do not rely only on selective Biomedical Sciences. | 90–97% · Strong likely | ~$54.1k OOS | Dependable admission plus hospitals, VA, free clinics, mobile clinics and strong pre-health advising. |
Michigan State Top 10 |
Human Biology; Biology and Psychology are accessible alternatives. | 80–92% · Strong likely | ~$67.0k OOS | Human Biology directly connects anatomy, physiology, genetics and professional-school exploration. |
Iowa State Top 10 |
Biology–human medicine, Biochemistry–premedicine, Open Option or Psychology. | 90–97% · Strong likely | ~$46.8k OOS | Strong admission and relative-value anchor with easy life-science exploration and dedicated advising. |
Illinois State Top 10 |
Biology: Physiology, Neuroscience & Behavior; Psychology or Molecular/Cellular Biology remain options. | 90–97% · Strong likely | ~$36.4k IL | Best true admission and financial safety in the pool, with a very strong interest match. Eva appears eligible for merit consideration; verify criteria and deadlines. |
Unless marked, cost benchmarks use 2026–27 published pages or current rates and generally assume campus housing. Wisconsin uses its latest complete 2025–26 nonresident benchmark. MSOE is an assembled estimate. None is a Fall 2027 guarantee or net price.
Local transfer pathway
Add CLC as Option 11 and the financial baseline.
College of Lake County is not directly comparable to the four-year Top 10. It is a lower-cost, local route for exploration followed by transfer—and a serious option if avoiding undergraduate debt becomes the priority.
Why it fits Eva
Biology, chemistry, psychology and anatomy can be explored in smaller classes without declaring medicine, dentistry or a narrow professional identity. The broad Biological Sciences A.S. is preferable to the labeled Pre-Medicine or Pre-Dentistry degrees while Eva remains undecided.
Transfer strategy
Build every semester around the intended university and major, not merely the associate degree. The U of I System guarantee requires 36 graded transferable hours and a 3.0 GPA, but it does not guarantee the requested UIUC college or major. For UIUC Biology, target at least a 3.5 overall and technical GPA.
Medical and dental options remain open
Community-college science is accepted by many professional schools, but policies vary. Preserve the widest range by completing strong upper-level biology and biochemistry after transfer and checking school-specific prerequisites before deciding where to take organic chemistry or physics.
CLC Scholars opportunity
Eva's 3.61 high-school GPA appears to clear the current 3.5 application threshold. The program can cover up to 15 academic credits each fall and spring and adds research and transfer preparation. The recommended 1200 SAT is not required; verify the Fall 2027 deadline and award terms.
| CLC is especially attractive if… | A four-year start is especially attractive if… |
|---|---|
| The family wants to minimize debt before possible medical or dental school; Eva wants more time to explore; commuting from home is acceptable; and she is comfortable joining a university as a transfer student. | A preferred university produces an affordable net price; Eva strongly values the residential freshman experience, marching band or campus integration; or a program offers opportunities that clearly justify the premium. |

Program fit
The most promising academic homes
These routes connect Eva's current interest in anatomy, biology and psychology without pretending that a particular profession is already decided.
Integrated Health Studies
Located in Applied Health Sciences, it combines biology, chemistry, psychology, anatomy/physiology, ethics and health context. Pre-med or pre-dental students must add any missing prerequisites.
Human Biology
A highly flexible match for human health, biology, biochemistry and behavior, with room for psychology and medical-science coursework.
Human Biology
Directly emphasizes anatomy, physiology, genetics and human health while preserving Biology or Psychology as accessible alternatives.
Physiology, Neuroscience & Behavior
Perhaps the cleanest single concentration tying together Eva's current interests in biology, anatomy, psychology and human behavior.
Biology, Society & Environment
Pairs serious biological science with social and health-related questions and can be customized for medical, dental or public-health preparation.
First-year Biology exploration
Students experience both organismal/integrative and molecular/cellular biology before choosing, making it unusually appropriate for an undecided biology student.
Biochemistry
It sounds medically adjacent but is chemistry-intensive and often includes substantial physics, calculus and laboratory work. Explore before making it the default.
Bioengineering
Typically requires physics, calculus, computation, modeling and engineering design. Eva can test it later through a course without applying to Engineering now.
Psychology + pre-health
Academically legitimate for medicine or dentistry, but Eva would need to fit in the full biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and physics prerequisites.
Testing strategy
Take one low-pressure fall SAT retake.
The registration cost is small relative to the optionality a higher score could create. Keep preparation contained so the attempt cannot crowd out senior grades, applications or sleep.
Target and posture
Aim for 1280–1300+, but treat any useful increase as a win. Take the test even if practice does not guarantee the target; do not turn it into a high-pressure project.
Highest-leverage skills
Prioritize Reading/Writing Expression of Ideas and Information and Ideas, then Math Problem-Solving/Data Analysis and Advanced Math. Algebra needs maintenance, not the largest time share.
Preparation cap
About 8–10 focused hours plus two official Bluebook practice tests. Use My Practice, the Student Question Bank and free Official SAT Prep on Khan Academy.
Score-use rule
Use an improved score where it helps. If the result is lower or flat, keep 1180 and withhold the new score where policies permit. No third test without a concrete scholarship or finalist-school reason.

Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State and ASU. Illinois State is neutral/optional.
Withhold when permitted
UIUC, UIC, Michigan, Indiana, Pitt, Minnesota, Penn State, UMass, WPI, Maryland and Illinois Tech.
Score not considered
UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly SLO.
Where improvement matters
Ohio State requires testing for Fall 2027; Purdue says testing is expected; Wisconsin and Penn have unresolved Fall 2027 rules.
Financial strategy
Sticker prices reveal why net price must drive the final cut.
Current annual cost-of-attendance benchmarks include direct and indirect costs and usually assume campus housing. They are not final Fall 2027 charges.
Bars are scaled to the most expensive school in the recommended Top 10, not to $100,000. Merit and need-based aid can change the ordering.
Admission safety ≠ financial safety
ASU and Michigan State are likely admits but currently publish OOS budgets around $63k–$67k. Illinois State is the clearest combined admission and financial safety.
Working premium rule
An OOS public should come within roughly $10,000 per year of the best Illinois net price—or provide a genuinely unique advantage—before it survives the final cut.
Application positioning
Present exploration as maturity, not indecision.
Eva does not need to claim that medicine, dentistry or a particular major is already settled. The honest evolution itself can make a coherent application.
Use this frame
Coursework and hands-on anatomy/biology experiences increased Eva's interest in human biology, behavior and health. She wants a college where she can test these interests thoughtfully and build a strong scientific foundation.
Avoid this frame
Do not criticize coding or AI, claim a settled medical identity, or use biomedical engineering merely to sound impressive. Earlier CS coursework was useful exploration that clarified her interests.
Math-grade context
If Additional Information is needed, keep it factual: the grade-10 AP Precalculus C was followed by A/A in AP Calculus AB and a 4 on the AP exam.
Skip accelerated commitments
GPPA, BS/MD, BS/DDS and similar programs are more selective and expect a degree of professional certainty that Eva appropriately does not yet claim.
Decision sequence
What to do next
The objective is to turn a researched list into a list Eva would actually attend and the family can realistically fund.
Eva completes the interest screen
Mark the Top 10, Michigan, Purdue, Penn State, ASU and CLC as would attend / maybe / would not attend. Remove every “would not attend” school, regardless of rank or admission odds.
Build a 6–8 school financial-finalist list, plus CLC
Keep Wisconsin only if Eva likes it enough to justify a high-reach application and possible retest. Preserve at least two strong-likely four-year options; remove redundant OOS schools that offer no clear advantage over UIC, UIUC, Illinois State or CLC.
Run net-price calculators for finalists only
Use identical family assumptions and record grants, merit estimates, travel and four-year cost. Set a family premium limit; as a starting rule, an OOS public should come within about $10,000 per year of the best Illinois option unless its advantage is genuinely distinctive.
Complete one low-pressure SAT retake
Use August 22 if a convenient seat remains, with September 12 as the fallback. Cap preparation at 8–10 focused hours plus two Bluebook practice tests; then stop unless a concrete scholarship or finalist-school reason justifies another attempt.
Add exposure while applications move forward
Arrange one healthcare conversation or shadowing experience and one biology/biochemistry academic exposure. Use what Eva learns to refine her essays and first-year exploration plan—not to force an early profession choice.
Methodology
How the recommendations were built
Official university sources were prioritized for admission profiles, test policy, program structure, internal-transfer rules, pre-health resources and current cost of attendance.
Chance ranges are analyst planning judgments, not formulas. They now incorporate three years of Stevenson/Naviance outcomes, including the tested neighborhood around Eva's current 3.98 weighted GPA and 1180 SAT, but they are not copied directly from a scattergram. Published overall admit rates and local historical proportions do not equal Eva's individual probability. The analysis also adjusts for college/major route, residency, testing policy, academic trend, senior rigor and program-specific barriers. It does not attempt to estimate later medical or dental-school admission.
Naviance limitations: The school history covers self-reported 2024–2026 Stevenson outcomes. The plotted local band excludes scoreless applicants and waitlists, does not identify major or applicant context, and can be unstable in small samples. Naviance still plotted Eva at an outdated 1060 SAT, so the report recomputed the local band around her documented 1180 instead of relying on Naviance's built-in test labels.
Costs: Unless otherwise identified, benchmarks use 2026–27 published pages or current rates and generally assume campus housing. Wisconsin uses 2025–26; MSOE is assembled from current components. These figures mix billable and estimated non-billable costs, so official net-price calculators—not sticker prices—must drive the financial shortlist.
CLC comparison: CLC is intentionally shown outside the four-year matrix because its open-access admission, commuter cost structure and transfer purpose are fundamentally different. Its published tuition figures are not directly comparable to residential four-year cost-of-attendance budgets.
Sources: Each row in the 25-school matrix links directly to current official admission and cost information. Program and advising sources, detailed reasoning, and the source-backed academic profile are retained in the canonical college-planning notes.
Privacy: This report intentionally omits Eva's address, birthdate, student IDs, College Board identifiers, record locator and other unnecessary personal information.
